Mercedes-AMG F1 heeft zojuist op hun Instagram-pagina bekend gemaakt dat Lewis Hamilton na 2024 het team zal verlaten. Hierbij is geen woord gerept over Ferrari. Mercedes zegt ook dat Hamilton zoals eerder genoemd gebruik heeft gemaakt van de ‘vluchtoptie’ in zijn tot en met 2025 durende contract.
Update 16:30: Mercedes personeel is ingelicht
Sky Sport News weet te melden met een reporter ter plaatse dat er deze middag een meeting is geweest in Brackley bij de kantoren van het Mercedes F1 team. Volgens de reporter arriveerden verschillende werknemers en 10-14 minuten na hun aankomst vertrokken zij weer.
Dat zou betekenen dat die meeting niet langer dan 10 minuten heeft geduurd. In die meeting is volgens de reporter ter plekke van Sky News het voor Mercedes slechte nieuws gebracht.
En ze hebben (tijdens die meeting: red) te horen gekregen dat Lewis Hamilton aan het einde van het seizoen 2024 Mercedes gaat verlaten. Het is enorm groot nieuws in de autosport. Het heeft er altijd naar uitgezien dat hij zijn carrière bij het Mercedes-team zou beëindigen, ze hebben zoveel van zijn initiatieven zowel buiten als op de baan gesteund, maar hij zal vertrekken om het rood van Ferrari te gaan dragen.

Voor het seizoen 2024 zijn er geen nieuwe coureurs ten opzichte van het afgelopen seizoen. Iedereen rijdt lekker waar die reed. Het was dus niet een bijzonder vermakelijk Silly Season, maar gelukkig is die van 2025 al begonnen! Jazeker, de GP van Bahrein 2024 (de eerste race van het nieuwe seizoen) moet nog verreden worden, maar de geruchtenmolen draait nu op volle toeren. Het ziet er namelijk naar uit dat Lewis Hamilton naar het team van Ferrari gaat! Ja, een ultiem droomscenario voor Hamilton, Ferrari, de Formule 1 en Drive To Survive lijkt zich te gaan vervullen. Nu gaan die geruchten al veel langer, maar vandaag waren ze sterker dan ooit.

Nu laat zelfs het Britse Autosport weten dat de transfer van Lewis Hamilton naar Ferrari toch écht in de maak is. Volgens Autosport zijn de onderhandelingen ‘in een vergevorderd stadium’. Sterker nog, de verwachting is dat aan het einde van deze week het bericht naar buiten gebracht kan gaan worden. Het is nu donderdag, dus dat is tussen nu en, eh, morgen!
De oplettende lezer zal ons erop attenderen dat Hamilton een contract heeft tot en met 2026. Er zit echter een clausule in voor Lewis om daar onderuit te komen. Sainz en Ferrari zijn druk met elkaar in onderhandeling voor de daaropvolgende jaren, maar het is duidelijk dat hij het kind van de rekening gaat worden. Nu is dat misschien niet héél erg. Bij Ferrari heeft Sainz niet dezelfde status als Leclerc, die vast ligt tot 2028. Daarnaast brengt ‘men’ Carlos in verband met Audi, dat in 2026 mee gaat doen met de F1. Die zoeken een hele degelijke en snelle coureur die geen introductie behoeft. Met Sainz heb je een droomkandidaat.
Voor Lewis Hamilton zou dit een heel bijzondere move zijn. Sinds 2007 rijdt hij met Mercedes-Benz motoren. Nog nooit reed hij met een ander merk. En qua teams is Hamilton eveneens erg trouw. Van 2007 tot en en met 2012 reed hij voor McLaren. Sinds 2013 rijdt hij voor Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton is net 39 jaar oud geworden, als Hamilton naar Ferrari gaat volgend jaar, begint hij als veertiger daar.
