Halton Regional Police officers responded to the house on Caplan Cres., near Fairview St. and Cumberland Ave., around 3:30 p.m. and found the “highly aggressive” dog in the backyard.
The dog reportedly attacked the homeowners – a man and a woman – and then attacked a neighbour who tried to help the couple.
Police told reporters the homeowners were seriously hurt but their injuries were not life-threatening and the neighbour suffered minor injuries.
Responding officers attempted to subdue the dog but ultimately had to shoot the aggressive animal.

Police have yet to confirm the dog’s breed but neighbours told reporters it resembled a pit bull.
In 2005, following numerous vicious attacks made headlines, the Ontario government passed legislation banning pit bulls – specifically pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers and American pit bull terriers.

The Dog Owners’ Liability Act also banned any dogs that have a similar appearance and physical characteristics of those breeds.
Dog lovers have always argued the breed-specific ban punishes dogs instead of owners and in recent years there has been a push for the Ford government to repeal the legislation.
