Ceramics are a versatile art form that can be made from several types of clay, each with its own unique properties. Here are some common types of clay used in ceramics:- Earthenware Clay: porous and low-firing, suitable for making pottery, tiles, and decorative objects.- Stoneware Clay: durable, less porous, and commonly used for functional pottery, dinnerware, and ovenware.- Porcelain Clay: fine-grained, high-firing, and known for its translucent appearance and strength. Often used for delicate and intricate items, such as fine china and figurines.- Raku Clay: designed to withstand thermal shock and rapid temperature changes, known for its unique crackled glaze and vibrant colors.- Sculptural Clay: used primarily for sculpting and modeling purposes, with different properties depending on the specific brand and formulation.- Terra Cotta Clay: low-fire and reddish-brown in color, often used for decorative objects, flowerpots, and tiles.- Fireclay: high-temperature clay used for refractory ceramics, such as kiln furniture, crucibles, and furnace linings.Ceramists choose the appropriate clay based on the desired outcome and firing techniques they plan to employ. The possibilities are endless! #Ceramics #Clay #Porcelain #Fire #Pottery

Antiquing marble is an ancient art that transforms marble slabs into works of art with a rustic, antique look, giving them a timeless #fascination. This technique requires #skills and #competence on the part of experienced marble masons, as it is necessary to work the surfaces carefully to achieve the desired effect. There are several main methods for antiquing marble:1๏ธโฃ Burring: Uses special machinery called โtumblersโ, which consume the marble with mechanical movements and abrasive chemical mixtures. This is followed by polishing and protection with special products.2๏ธโฃ Brushing: Uses abrasive brushes to make the surface satin-finished, accentuating differences in pigmentation and giving it a worn appearance.3๏ธโฃ Sandblasting and acid-etching: This technique combines the use of a portable sandblaster with the application of chemical acid for an โorange peelโ effect, enhancing pigmentation and an antique look.4๏ธโฃ Mixed techniques: Combines several techniques such as brushing and bush-hammering to achieve an eroded and time-worn effect. What do you think? These are high-fire ceramic tiles I made in 2008 while living in California. A high-firing is over 2300 degrees f. Glazes liquefy at these temperatures, so to create a pattern, one must control the flow of the glazes. One technique is Cuerda seca, where a grease substance is drawn on the tile which acts as a barrier to hold glaze in place and burns leaving black lines. A second technique is to use clay to build little walls. I achieved this by carving the reverse of the design into dried plaster blocks and then forcing to clay slab into the recessed lines with a rubber mallet. The second photo shows the carved plaster block used to create the first tile. Different carved plaster blocks were created for each of these original designs.#ceramics #tiles #art #interiordesign #handmade #craft

1569 CRAFTS of SURFACE MAKING -by Gautam Shah https://lnkd.in/dD3furhs Mosaics were composed of Tesserae of natural, ceramic, glass, paper, leather, wood, etc. The Collage, Bricolage and Dรฉcollage are material layering techniques. Montage and computer-based morphing are also layering technologies. Woods are used for Inlay, Figure-wood surfaces, Marquetry, Parquetry and Certosina. Patchwork involves using pre cut-shaped pieces or origami like folded units of fabric, leather or paper into a larger composition or utilitarian item. Inlaying is a manner of inserting-fixing pieces of materials, such as for Khatam-kari or Khatam-bandi.

DISCOVER THE UNSEEN | Breathing new life into an ancient medium: Kristi Cavataro's tubular tales of color and form.Kristi Cavataro liberates stained glass from its conventional roles in church windows and lamps. She blends age-old techniques with modern styles, composing tubular designs to create a league of their own. Each piece of glass is hand-cut, polished, and then welded together using the renowned method of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Plywood shutters provide temporary support during construction and are removed once the form is stable. The outcome is a fascinating display of three-dimensional geometric shapes, forming suggestive architectonic structures.Standing around one meter tall, these handmade structures are from a laborious process of cutting, wrapping, and soldering individual glass tiles to compose complex cylindrical compositions.#discovertheunseen#kristicavataro#stainedglass#geometricforms#contemporaryart#glass#sculpture

๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ง ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐ง ๐๐ซ๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐ Pottery making is an #ancient and #fascinating art involving several steps. Here is a list of the main stages involved in the creation of ceramic works:1๏ธโฃ ๐๐ก๐จ๐ข๐๐ ๐จ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฒ: There are various types of clay, each with specific characteristics. A wooden platter, created and rendered in Fusion 360. The image showcases the wooden platter, using three types of wood, White Oak, Walnut, and Rosewood. The technique is quite popular, using different wood types, joining them together with the use of wood glue or some adhesive, and turning the raw block of wood on the machine to shape the desired profile. Afterward, sending and polishing the object, for desired looks. It can be lacquered, or the coating of an adhesive can also be used. #art #artwork
