Chapter Text

Velvet’s heat was over.

It was clear to her the moment she woke up. Velvet could fully think clearly and didn’t feel as horny anymore. The room was the same one she started her heat in a large bed against the back wall, dim lights, a bathroom on the left and right of the bed and clothes left abandoned on the floor. In the past, Velvet would have gathered all her clothing before leaving for the study area, then spent the rest of the day reviewing what she needed to do to catch up on the missed days. It would usually take a while to catch up with her classmates and then she would finally return to her team. But things were very different this time as she wasn’t alone, she had Ruby with her.

Velvet looked over at Ruby’s sleeping form on the other side of the bed. Ruby’s soft red hair was messily covering her pillow as she rested peacefully against the bed. Most of her body was covered in a blanket except for her neck which was in full displace showing Velvet all the bite marks she had left behind.

Velvet felt her face light up with embarrassment and shame. This shame didn’t actually stop her mind from wandering to Ruby and the fun they had again and again. Every part of Velvet’s brain couldn’t stop thinking about Ruby. Her moans rang in her ears, her bites making their mark on her skin, and those sweet shimmering silver eyes how Ruby’s kisses tasted like cookies, how she giggled when Velvet would kiss her neck, and that fact she even helping her in the first place. Velvet lay on the bed in a shame-filled ball of embarrassment as everything that made Ruby so cute and beautiful filled her head. Velvet cursed Ruby’s cuteness for a moment. Why did Ruby have to be so wonderful? Why was she so flustered now?

But Velvet knew the answer very well. Velvet knew why Ruby seemed like a silver-eyed goddess to her. Velvet knew why she had always been nervous to talk to Ruby. Velvet knew why her heart would skip a beat when Ruby would laugh at her jokes that only they understood. Velvet fell in love with the sweet loving huntress to be laying next to her. And Velvet fell hard.

Velvet mindlessly moved her hair out of her eyes and Velvet's ears picked up on a shift in the room. As she turned to the sound Velvet realized what it was as she saw Ruby shifting in her sleep. Velvet’s eyes went wide at the realization, Ruby was waking up. Velvet fell into full panic mode before a voice snapped her out of her head midway through overthinking the situation.

“Velvet?” Ruby said groggily as she blinked herself awake.

“Um- I’m fine- Totally fine- Um…” Velvet sputtered out trying to think of something to say. Ruby didn’t seem to listen as she yawned and struggled to lift herself into a sitting position. Velvet looked over nervously as she noticed Ruby sighing she looked around and then noticed where Velvet was. Ruby blinked as she looked at Velvet for what felt like hours but was probably less than a minute with an odd look of confusion on her face. Velvet just blinked in response. She had no idea what to do till Ruby asked her a question. “Is… Is your heat over?” Ruby asked tilting her head to the side like a confused puppy.

“Uh- Yeah, how did you know?” Velvet asked with confusion that was quickly matched by Ruby. “You don’t remember?” Ruby asked in return as she rubbed away the last bit of sleep from her mind. Velvet blanked, they had a lot of fun together and she didn’t know specifically what Ruby was referring to so she just shook her head. “You’ve been cuddling me every time we fell asleep, when I wake up you're usually pressing up against me. It was kind of nice.” Ruby said looking away from Velvet with her cheeks turning a light shade of red in the dim light.

Velvet just stared into the sheets as she possessed what Ruby just said. Her mind ran a million miles a second as she leaped between surprised, embarrassed, overwhelmed, happy, and flustered.

“So…” Ruby asked snapping Velvet out of her thoughts, “Are we supposed to go back to our teams now?”

“No, we need to go to the study chambers now to catch up on the days we missed” Velvet clarified sheepishly realizing she didn’t explain anything to Ruby.

Ruby answered with a simple nod as she started getting out of bed with Velvet following close behind. Velvet walked over to a light nob that she slowly raised to brighten the room. Since the two of them have spent the last… while in a very dim room, a quick light stitch would be blinding. As Velvet turned around to see how the room looked more clearly she noticed Ruby slipping into the red hoodie. Velvet could recognize it as the one Ruby was wearing when she arrived. She didn’t know if it was because of how cute Ruby was or maybe some leftover hormones but the oversized red hoodie made Ruby look incredibly cute. Velvet smiled as she admired Ruby before realizing she was staring. “Thank you for coming in and helping me Ruby” Velvet said turning her attention to the floor, staring at Ruby would probably be really creepy.

“Velvet, I told you before it’s nothing. I mean it’s…” Ruby paused as she looked away from Velvet. Velvet noticed Ruby’s odd pause and returned her full attention to her waiting for her to continue. Ruby sighed and nervously asked, “Are we still friends?”

Velvet froze like a deer in the headlights. She expected Ruby to have things to say to her after she had done but she never imagined Ruby to be so blunt. Velvet had lost lots of friendships because of her heats but she didn’t think Ruby would offer to help and then leave her out to dry like this. She couldn’t help the tears that started to prick her eyes blurring her vision. She almost wanted to laugh, she truly thought for a moment that Ruby felt the same. Shear panic filled every bone in her body started to shake like a leaf left alone in the wind. The panic felt so extreme she had to sit herself down on the edge of the bed.

“So-” Velvet struggled to say fighting back tears, “you- you don’t want to be friends anymore?”

“NO!” Ruby almost screamed at the top of her lungs making Velvet sting slightly with the sudden increase in volume.

“Nononononononononono! That’s NOT what I meant!” Ruby said scrambling to the side of the teary-eyed and shivering rabbit faunus. “I still want to be your friend, please, believe me when I tell you that but, welllll…” Ruby said rubbing the many hickeys on her neck, “Friends don’t do what WE did”

Velvet blinked as Ruby wiped away any last tears on her face. Ruby was definitely right about the fact that they weren't really ‘just friends’ anymore. Or at least they couldn’t just go back to being just friends. They had f*cked and slept with each other for hours, nonstop, they could never try to act like this didn't happen. Ruby could be assigned as a partner for her heats so they could hook up but Velvet didn’t want Ruby to be a heat hookup. Velvet wanted more but didn’t want Ruby to only be with her because she wanted to help. Even after everything Velvet had done Ruby was still here for her so there was only one thing Velvet could do, let Ruby choose.

“Well…” Velvet started nervously as she looked over at Ruby sitting beside her on the bed, “What do YOU want us to be?” Ruby paused and looked away from Velvet for a moment. Velvet could see Ruby was thinking very hard about this decision which caught Velvet off guard. Ruby usually led with her heart rather than her head but this was different. Velvet could see the gears turning in Ruby’s mind how she seemed to be going through multiple choices. She started to worry until she left something wrapped around her hand, it was Ruby’s hand gripping Velvet’s tightly.

“Could we be girlfriends?” The question hung in the air as silence followed it, Velvet blushing like crazy and processing what Ruby had said.

As the silence lingered and Velvet kept silent in her shock Ruby started to panic herself. Ruby then began to ramble uncontrollably about how if Velvet didn’t want to be her girlfriend Velvet could hear her over the fireworks and happy internal screaming happening within her mind. Velvet felt like she was bound to explode with pure joy at hearing Ruby ask the question. She was so excited that she didn’t realize Ruby’s worry for what Velvet wanted but this was exactly what she wanted. This was everything Velvet could ever want, and she had it. She had a girlfriend.

“YES!” ex-calmed and scooped Ruby up in her arms and spun her around. Ruby was midway through rambling about something else when Velvet scooped her up but quickly matched Velvet's joy. “You want me to be your girlfriend?” Ruby asked in a confused and hopeful tone as she blinked in shock. Velvet kept spinning Ruby and so she focused on Velvet’s face to try stopping herself from getting dizzy. “Yes! YesyesyesyesyesYES!” was Velvet’s only answer as she kept spinning Ruby around in her arms.

Ruby smiled wide with giddy joy as the realization hit her. “REALLY! Yes! I Love You!” Ruby blurted without thinking and suddenly Velvet stopped in her tracks. Ruby looked down in surprise to see Velvet’s eyes wide as she stared up at her. She looked in complete awe at something but Ruby didn’t know what. Velvet still had a tight grasp on Ruby but it now seemed much tighter. “Velvet-” “Say it again.” Velvet said cutting Ruby’s question off before she could ask it, “What you said. Say it again.” Ruby blinked in confusion before realizing what she had said a moment ago. Ruby turned her face away from Velvet as her face suddenly turned a deep shade of red that would put her cape to shame.

“What-” “Ruby.” Velvet said cutting Ruby off once more but in a softer tone than before, “Please, say it again.” Ruby was still blushing like crazy but when she looked down to see Velvet’s face she saw Velvet looking up at her like a desperate dog begging for scraps. There was nothing but need in her eyes but it wasn’t the sexual need she had seen before,
it was an emotional need. So Ruby did as asked.

“I- I love you?” Ruby said sheepishly as she looked away from Velvet in embarrassment only for Velvet to pull Ruby closer and say “Again.”

“I love you,” Ruby said more firmly than before as she now understood what Velvet asked of her. Velvet tightened her grip around Ruby but also buried her face into Ruby’s chest with Ruby being able to hear the faintest “Again, please…”

“I love you.” Ruby said as she laid her head over Velvet, gently whispering it into Velvet’s rabbit ear for only Velvet to hear. The two stayed in the position until Velvet’s arms eventually gave out. Velvet spent the rest of the day right next to Ruby; walking down the hall, studying together, and napping. Ruby didn’t know why those three words meant so much to Velvet but she would try to remember to say it whenever she could. Ruby usually had a hard time remembering things like this but every time she looked over to see the dopey smile on Velvet’s face.
