Since the first Ford Mustang already went on sale in 1964 and it’s been in continued production ever since, it’s become Ford’s longest-running nameplate. It was one of the cars that started the pony-car class and has been an enduring success, despite the arrival of many competitors. After sitting on continual updates of the Fox platform for more than 20 years, the redesign of the Ford Mustang for MY2005 - its fifth generation - migrated it to the new D2C platform, so it was a new car from the ground up. Updates of this platform would be used for all subsequent Ford Mustang generations up to the present day. The fifth-gen Ford Mustang was on the market for ten model years before it was replaced with the sixth, a lower, wider car without the pronounced wedge profile of its predecessor. In production from the 2024 model year, changes to the Ford Mustang’s current seventh generation include a total redesign of the body and a tech-rich new cabin, but underneath it’s very much an upgrade of the old car.

Though reskinned and with a new tech-heavy interior, the seventh-gen S650 Mustang is in fact a major overhaul of the S550. It launched with a 315-hp 2.3L turbo-four with a 10-speed auto only, a 480-hp 5.0L V8 GT also available with the six-speed stick shift, and a Dark Horse trim with a 500-hp version of the 5.0L V8.

For the S550’s first update for the 2018 model year, the Ford Mustang’s base V6 engine was finally dropped, the V8 was uprated to 460 hp, and the old six-speed automatic made way for a new 10-speed auto co-developed with GM. Continual adjustments over the years saw the arrival of a High Performance 2.3L turbo-four with 332 hp, a 5.0L V8 rerated to 450 hp for the GT, and a 470-hp 5.0L Mach 1.

Applied to the 2010-2012 model years, the S-197 II Ford Mustang’s first update came with refreshed styling and a V8 uprated to 315 hp for MY2010, but the entire engine lineup was replaced the next year, with a brand-new aluminum 3.7L base Duratec V6 with 305 hp at the bottom of the range, and a 5.0L Coyote V8 with four valves per cylinder and 412 hp for the GT. The manual and automatic transmissions were now both six-speed units. In 2011 the Boss 302 model arrived with a 444-hp 5.0L V8 and a manual transmission.
